Black York Region Youth (BYR Youth) was founded in 2020 by four youth named Sydney Baxter, Cameron Davis, Rachel Cheng, and Hannah Mullings-Tatum, plus adult mentor and leader, District 16-OSSTF teacher Vanessa Stoby. Our organization was founded with the purpose of combatting anti-Black racism, systemic racism, anti-Indigenous hate, and discrimination in all of its forms within York Region and the Greater Toronto Area. Over the years, BYR Youth has continued to grow into a group of almost 30 passionate BIPOC Youth and allies who are driving the change.
This event would not be possible without the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Created by youth for youth, this is a group for Black youth and Allies to address anti-Black racism in York Region, a municipality in Ontario, Canada. This is a space for us to learn to dismantle and challenge anti-Black racism and systemic oppression. We will actively organize and stand in solidarity together. This group was created as a follow-up to the Markham BLM Protest on June 13th, 2020, which was featured on several media outlets, including Global News.Learn More About Us
